Note: this is Part III of The Power Within: Taking Command of Your Physical,Mental, & Spiritual Health series.

Spiritual health

The importance of spiritual health cannot be overstated as it plays a significant role in an individual's overall well-being and quality of life. Spiritual health refers to the sense of purpose, meaning, and connection one feels with themselves, others, and the world around them. It is a fundamental aspect of human existence and is closely linked to emotional, mental, and physical health.

When it comes to spiritual health, various myths and misconceptions exist that can influence people's perceptions and understanding of this aspect of well-being. Common myths surrounding spiritual health include:

Religious Equivalence

One common myth is that spiritual health is solely tied to religious beliefs and practices. However, spirituality extends beyond religion, embracing a broader sense of purpose, meaning, and connection with oneself, others, and the universe, regardless of religious affiliation.

Instant Enlightenment

Some people believe that engaging in spiritual practices will lead to instant enlightenment or immediate solutions to life's challenges. In reality, spiritual growth is a gradual and ongoing process that requires patience, dedication, and self-reflection.

Exclusivity and Elitism

Some spiritual paths or teachings may promote a sense of exclusivity or elitism, suggesting that only a select few can attain spiritual enlightenment. True spirituality should be inclusive, promoting compassion and understanding for all individuals on their unique journeys.

Disconnection from the World

Many people believe that spiritual health requires detachment from the world and its problems. In contrast, spiritual growth often involves cultivating empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for others and the planet

It's essential to approach spiritual health with an open mind, embracing its diverse manifestations and respecting individual beliefs and practices. Being aware of these myths can help people develop a more balanced and authentic understanding of spirituality and its potential impact on their lives.

Spiritual health influences everyday life, permeating various aspects of experiences, behaviors, and relationships. It provides a sense of purpose, guiding daily actions towards a more fulfilling existence. Spirituality positively impacts emotional well-being, fostering resilience and inner peace through practices like meditation and prayer. Mindfulness cultivates appreciation for simple pleasures and connection with the surroundings.

Compassion and empathy thrive with spiritual health, leading to kinder interactions in social environments. Gratitude practices shift perspectives, enhancing contentment and focusing on life's positives. Ethical considerations and prioritizing others' well-being become integral to decision-making.

Spirituality strengthens personal relationships through shared beliefs, promoting unity and support. During challenging times, spiritual beliefs offer comfort and strength. Engaging in spiritual practices like yoga and meditation improves physical health.

Spiritual practices foster environmental awareness and sustainable behaviors. Spiritual health transcends materialism, encouraging contentment beyond possessions and promoting mindful consumption.

Self-reflection and introspection are common aspects of spiritual health, facilitating personal growth and increasing self-awareness. These enriching practices integrate spirituality into everyday life.

Tips for Maintaining Your Spiritual Health

Personally I am an avid student of Dr. Joseph Murphy, Florence Scovel Shinn, and Neville Gaddard's teachings. Later I discovered that many successful entrepreneurs, business people are also influenced by them.

As a Scribd subscriber, my routine has always been listening to their teachings first thing in the morning and last thing before I drift off to sleep. I have affirmations written for all occasions--from feeling lost, to working with people who are difficult to communicate with, to calming my nerves before important presentations.

Pursuing their teachings taught me to gracefully embrace all days and circumstances. It is much easier to accept responsibility and hold myself accountable than to blame others.

The other habit I would like to share with you is that being true to myself is crucial. Being true to myself is accepting exactly how I feel at the time without judging myself. For example, there are days I feel sad for no reason. In the past I would panic and wonder if I was suffering from depression and all sorts of horrifying thoughts. And now? I acknowledge the fact that I am sad and ask the universe if there is a message for me to comprehend. Sometimes I would just cry. It's a type of detoxification. I no longer tell myself I shouldn't feel that way, but accept myself wholeheartedly.

In Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life, he wrote, "Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping." And this is exactly that.

Writing journals is another way I maintain my spiritual health. Check out some of the personal journals I designed below:
